Born out of curiosity and an interest in performer-led music-making, 'Missing Pieces' is a collection of 5 compositions by Manchester-based violinist, composer, and improviser Gemma Bass, all of which intentionally have bits missing. Key elements of the music are left to chance or choice and put into the hands of whoever is performing them.

Suitable for students, amateurs, professionals, ensembles, and chamber groups interested in more autonomy in their music-making, Missing Pieces is an infinitely adaptable body of work. This versatility is clear in Gemma’s ambitions for the set, beginning with the release of 'Part 1 (me)’ on Efpi Records on 1 December 2023.

In this first iteration Gemma works alone, at home, using mainly first takes, in what is an honest statement of these ideas in their simplest form. It’s a deeply personal collection – “my concepts, my ideas, my voice, my instruments, in my house, following my instincts throughout” – which invites the listener into Gemma’s musical world and into the 'Missing Pieces' scores and project as a whole.

'Missing Pieces' is not only a fascinating set of compositions but a tool to encourage, inspire, and facilitate wider engagement with and participation in contemporary music and improvisation, in the manner of John Stevens’ seminal 'Search and Reflect'. The compositions, the recordings in 'Part 1', and the wider programme of activity across 2024 announce and firmly position Gemma Bass as a hugely exciting, creative, and inspirational artistic voice.
